The DAR, founded in 1890, and headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a volunteer women’s service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history and securing America’s future through better education for children (from the NSDAR website).
The John Hanson Chapter, NSDAR was organized in 1965. One of the 48 chapters in Maryland, John Hanson is the only chapter in Calvert County and currently boasts over 40 members. Meetings are held on the second Saturday of each month, September through May. Prospective members are welcome at meetings. Each chapter is led by a Regent. The chapter Registrar is one of the members most knowledgeable in assisting prospective members with genealogical research and preparation of the required application papers.
